Clouds - Lenticular clouds

This rare cloud type needs a feature to help seed them, for example a mountain as in this case. The wind passes over the mountain and as the the wind descends over the other side, the air warms up, forming water droplets, making these strange clouds. To find out more about this strange phenomenon, search for information on lenticular clouds. 

Clouds - morning glory

These clouds are extremely rare and little is known about them. The Gulf of Carpentaria in Northern Australia is where they can be found most frequently. Stretching up to 1,000 km long and 2 km high, they can sit only 200 m above ground and move at a speed of 35-70 km an hour. 

Dust storms

Dust storms occur naturally but they are a weather phenomenon that is increasing in frequency due to the increase in farming methods which can create them.

Fire whirl

This fire whirl has a number of different names which is odd as they are quire rare. Sometimes called fire devils, fire tornadoes, firenado or fire twisters, they were measured up to 500 metres wide in Australia.
