Treeline

As you go up the mountain, the temperature drops. Eventually, you go up the mountain so far that the temperature drops low enough and long enough to prevent tress from growing. The treeline will be

slightly higher on south facing slopes than north facing slopes as they have the warmth of the sun to encourage tree growth.

Mountain farming

It is rare to find large open areas of flat land in mountainous areas. When you you do, the colder temperatures at higher altitudes prevent a large number of crops from being planted. The land is often left as meadow for feeding livestock. In Winter, these animals have to be brought in to protect them from the winter weather.
